Ride for free

Photobucket

The bane of every jeepney driver's life - the freeloader. Or in local parlance, the sabit, which literally means hitcher. Most hitchers don't pay anything, the rationale being they don't get to sit anyway. Is it dangerous? You bet. But they don't care anyway.

Oh I thought everybody paid.

Actually, they do pay. When I was much, MUCH younger, I did this too. ;)

Oh that's good to hear! When I would do field work in graduate school I'd always ride in these jeepneys and those hitchers never paid. It's good to hear not everyone's like that! :)

I remember my jeepney ride in Manila, and yes, there were alot of hitchers! I don't know if they payed or not (probably not since ours was reserved) but they were amazing! Some even jumped from one jeepney to another. They should join a circus :)
